The idea behind the MEGA portal is simple. We want to offer users easy and secure p2p chat. No registration is required for communication, nor is it necessary to provide a telephone number. Once you create a room, share the link to the room with other users. Anyone can join anonymously with a nickname. The chat does not record history or any other data. When the room creator destroys the room, the reference to the room is also deleted. As long as the room is alive you can talk in it. All inactive rooms are automatically destroyed within 1 hour. The room can be used by one or more users.

NOTE: for safety reasons, the room closes after 60 seconds of inactivity. Of course, you can re-access the room by re-logging in.

In order to open a data channel we first need a P2P connection. In order to establish a P2P connection, we need a signaling server. Our current supported 3rd party gateway provider is an open source WebRTC server, Janus Media Server. As such, it doesn't provide any functionality other than implementing the means to set up a WebRTC media communication with a browser, exchanging JSON messages with it, and relaying RTP/RTCP and messages between browsers. We only utilize their DataChannel Plugin, using create and destroy rooms. MEGAChat Janus API endpoint is accesible here.

Using a room password, end-to-end encryption (e2e) communication is established. Crypto-JS provides encryption which is a growing collection of standard and secure cryptographic algorithms implemented in JavaScript using best practices and patterns.

WebRTC is a technology that allows peer to peer transmission of three channels: audio, video and data. At the moment we are using only data channel.
